What’s The Difference between Light, Medium, And Heavy-Duty Castor Wheels?

When it comes to the mobility of equipment, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Whether you are moving a food cart, tool chest or any heavy industrial machinery, different types of castors are required for each application. At TM Castors, we understand that each industry has its unique demands when it comes to castor wheels. Which is why we offer a wide variety of castor solutions that are tailored to various environments and usage types. In this blog, let’s first understand what castor wheels are, what the different materials castor wheels are made of, and the difference between light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty castors.

What Are Castor Wheels

Castor wheels are unpowered wheels that are attached to the base of larger items for easy movement across a floor or other hard surface. They are widely used in items like shopping carts, office chairs, hospital beds and industrial equipment for material handling needs. Castor wheels are available in several types to suit specific uses, offering key mobility benefits like durability, resistance to corrosion, weather and water. Choosing the right type of castor wheels depends on the terrain and the load capacity. Heavier loads require more robust wheels, and larger objects might need multiple casters to evenly distribute weight.

Light Duty Castors

As their name suggests, Light-duty castors are designed to transport relatively light loads, typically up to 400-500 pounds. These castors are used in various industries as server racks, institutional equipment, generator sets, kitchen trolleys, general racks and cases, electronic frames and more. At TM Castors, our light-duty castors are designed to provide smooth and reliable performance, featuring a 2.5 mm pressed steel top plate and dual steel balls for swivel action. With 2mm pressed steel legs, 6 mm hex head bolt axle with lock nut or rivet option and a 13 mm diameter heat-treated kingpin, these castors offer exceptional durability and stability.

Medium Duty Castors

Medium-duty castors are engineered to carry weights ranging from 500-1500 pounds. These types of castors are typically used in distribution carts, disposal trucks, laundry carts, floor trucks, shop carts, tool boxes, hospital beds, hotel luggage carts, display racks and platform trolleys. They are also good to be used for medical equipment. At TM Castors, medium-duty castors are designed for high performance with a 3mm pressed steel top plate and tempered and polished steel balls that ensure minimal swivel head play and provide smooth rolling. Built with 3mm pressed steel legs, 12 mm diameter hex head bolt with lock nut and a 17 mm diameter heat-treated kingpin, these castors are ideal for medium-duty applications with different floor conditions.

Heavy Duty Castors

Heavy-duty castors can hold substantially heavy loads ranging from 2,000 to 44,000 pounds. These castors can usually be built with high-quality materials like nylon, steel, elastic solid rubber, and polyurethane. With its robust construction and superior design, heavy-duty castors are an ideal choice for industries where safety, performance, and durability are needed. What makes heavy-duty castors special is their high load-bearing capacity, which improves operational efficiency and also ensures reliability. Heavy-duty castor wheels are engineered to withstand the rigorous demands of industries where light and medium-duty castors aren’t efficient.

What Are the Different Materials Castor Wheels Are Made Of?

Castor wheels can be made of different materials, each of which serves a different purpose. Here are the different materials castor wheels are made of:

  • Rubber – Rubber is used for smooth and quiet operation. They are ideal to be used in castors that are used indoors.
  • Cast Iron/Steel – One of the significant reasons to use this material is that it has a high capacity. It is weather-resistant and is best used for rough surfaces and heavy loads.
  • Nylon – Nylon is used for multiple reasons. It can withstand all sorts of solvents and extreme weather conditions. It is best to carry loads where the sun is shining all day long.
  • Polyurethane – Castor wheels that are made from this material are durable and can easily handle heavier loads. It is a common choice in industrial settings where floor protection is a priority.
  • Polypropylene –Castors that are made using this material are known for being lightweight and for their resistance to corrosion, which makes them a good option for a wide range of applications.

Choosing the Right Castor with TM Castors

The type of castor you should choose depends on your application, the type of environment you are going to be using the castor wheel in, and the type of load you are going to be using it for. If your application involves carrying lightweight loads, you should opt for light-duty castors. If you want to carry medium-heavy loads, choose the medium-duty castors and the heavy-duty castors to carry extreme heavy loads. At TM Castors, we are not only the best castor supplier in India, but we also help you find the right castor solution for you. Our casters provide high-performance, long-lasting bearings, hardened, precision-machined raceways, and lubrication points for all swivels to last long under demanding conditions.
